Overview

The overall state is roughly:

  • Windows servers are fine
  • Windows desktops are fine
  • Unix servers are fine
  • Unix/Mac desktops may need some config changes (detailed at Accessing your home directory) to access the windows servers

Unix servers

Many problems have existed for over 7 years, but various band-aids have been in place to make them less noticeable. Finally the band-aids have failed, and the old problems show through. We are currently working on building new machines which mimic as closely as possible the old (which can no longer exist). In the longer term, we will be retiring certain archaic features which degrade the overall service for most users.

The t-machine

You may be interested to know the history of the t-machines, to understand why it does not make all that much sense to talk about them. However, it is common practice, so here is the status:

I believe T-machines are currently functional for:

(Pine problems are hopefully fixed, but see also HCMAPFL ate my mail)

Functions not working:

  • ensuring files in public_html are world readable,
  • some files were renamed 7 years ago, and files called HCMAPTBL.IDX were created for bookkeeping. The bookkeeper has left the building.
  • "transparent" access to home directory fails for only a few users now
  • sshd has an intermittent, undiagnosed failure preventing new logins (last seen 2008-01-18 15:33-0500)
  • No macaulay, octave, cocoa, mathematica, magma.

Help request procedure

Some problems are very well known, but some need to be brought to our attention. Here is a basic list. If your problem is not on the list, then likely it is not known, so send a help request, but please be patient as this is a very busy time.

  • Please send a help request for "ssh died?" if when connecting to the t-machine you instantly are disconnected before even entering a password.
  • Please send a help request for "make my public_html be public" if you are getting 403 Forbidden or access denied for your new webpages.
  • Please send a help request for "cannot mount home on T" if you do not have any of your files after logging into the T-machine.
  • Please send a help request for "pine folders" if your pine cannot access your mail folders on the t-machine.
  • Please be patient if Mozilla, Thunderbird, Webmail cannot access your IMAP mail folders.

The mail server

Mail server can currently:

  • send mail
  • store mail in /var/mail,
  • give access to /var/mail via POP and IMAP
  • read most ~/.forward files
  • obey most ~/.forward files
  • run standard spam and virus detection

Mail server is having trouble:

  • reading some forward files (fixed on individual basis)
  • reading ~/Mail and ~/mail (pine and elm mail)
  • editing ~/.forward and ~/Mail/.subscriptions
  • delivering to home directories

Web server

The unix web server provides:

Web server can currently:

  • handle all non-user websites completely
  • handle user websites which were "sane" from a windows point of view (no symbolic links, no case-sensitive filenames, simple permissions)

Web server is currently having trouble:

  • with user accounts which have broken public_html (which were transparently fixed in the past by a piece of software now retired since that piece of software also did most of the breaking)

Note that webmail may appear broken since it does not give access to ~/Mail and ~/mail, but I classify that under the mail server functions (web correctly asks, mail politely declines).

Unix desktops

Please see Unix on the desktop for general information as well as:

Windows servers

The windows web server, and windows SQL server are operating normally. These provide:

  • www.msc.uky.edu which provides some personal pages with ASP support
  • MathClass which provides WHS for many 100level math and Spanish courses
  • KCM which provides support for the Kentucky Center for Mathematics
  • AMSP which provides a variety of services for AMSP and related grants
  • other lesser used sites.

The windows file server cluster is functioning normally. These provide access to your windows U:\ drive, as well as storage for your profile, and some applications available on your windows T:\ drive. This in particular provides the storage for your unix home directory.

The windows print servers, name servers, maple server, centra server, and vpn server are functioning normally.

Windows desktops

Mathskeller

Inslab

Printers

POT715n, POT715n2, POT918n, and POT918n2 are functioning normally.
